It is important to understand that there are many types of scars. The same treatment cannot be used on hyperpigmented scars, red scars, atrophic scars or fibrous scars. For example, a recent scar (red scar) should be seen to more urgently than an old scar.
At Clinic Lémanic we design scar treatment plans on a case-specific basis. Lasers are almost always used, sometimes in conjunction with other equipment. Patients at Clinic Lémanic enjoy the most advanced technology and techniques in the field. We use a spectrum of lasers, classed as high-performance Energy Based Devices (EBD), to achieve the best possible treatment results for our patients.
Fractional lasers are most commonly used. They can reduce different types of scars, facial pores and certain types of stretch marks. Fractional lasers are particularly effective when used to support the healing of post-surgical scars resulting in less visible scarring after an operation. Treatment should ideally start immediately after the removal of sutures as the more recent a scar is, the faster and more effective the treatment.
Fractional laser treatment can be used on the body and the face. It is harmless, comfortable, fast, and requires little recuperation time, allowing patients to return to their normal activities without delay. Fractional lasers can be used on men and women of any age.
The science behind fractional lasers
Fractional lasers function according to the principal of selective photothermolysis. This is a recent technique which treats the skin using light energy which is emitted from the laser in several microscopic columns (as opposed to a single beam). Thanks to this technology fractional lasers produce a fine matrix of alternating treated and untreated skin which ensures rapid and even healing. As opposed to ablative laser therapies, the technique works at a deeper level yet allows for fast healing (four to five days) and less intensive aftercare. It is important to note that scars can have multiple causes and they may require a custom treatment plan. The doctor will assess the specific nature of your scar and recommend the type of laser and technique most suited to your problem. For the best results, at Clinic Lémanic we tend to combine several treatments using different equipment:
- pigment lasers;
- ablative laser ;
- CO2 repair lasers;
- fraxel repair;
- pixel lasers;
- vascular lasers;
- photobiomodulation (LED therapy);
- fractional radio waves;
- mechanical treatments.
In the case of extensive scars, a topical anaesthetic can be used to render the treatment painless, treat several areas at the same time and advance the treatment more rapidly.
